New Year, Clean Slate, New Beginnings
January 3, 2018 / byrunningwhilevegan / Categories : UncategorizedWelcome to 2018! Whether you make resolutions, intentions, or simply nurse a hangover the first 24 hours, here we are! I don’t set resolutions anymore, and I like the idea of intentions, but the jargon rubs me the wrong way. Goals! That’s what I set! This year I would like to run 1000 miles, and get some new PRs along the way. I bought the Rock’n Roll 10 race TourPass, so I’m sure getting there, while still a feat, will be doable. I also have Pasadena Half and LA Marathon coming up! I’d like for Mike and I to find our own place in the next couple of months, complete with a kitchen so that I can start cooking and baking again! Besides running, my passion is recipe creating, pastry work and cooking in general. It’s my dream to host parties again, and get to the point I can host my own pop-up. I’ve been making other people’s food in the restaurant industry for over a decade, and I’m ready to make my own. Which is one of the reasons I moved from BOH to FOH as a server – I needed a break from restaurant kitchen life. I’ve been enjoying it, but there’s still this nagging feeling I need to venture out on my own, once and for all.
Mike and I have been sick in bed from right after Christmas to right after New Years. I haven’t started the new year with a bang, but bed rest has actually been kind of nice! In a restless, I-don’t-want-to-watch-anything-else-on-Netflix-or-Redox, I-just-want-to-not-get-winded-taking-a-shower, kind of way. It’s also been relaxing after a very busy six months. I’m probably not going to train for my upcoming half marathons in the traditional way – I’ll focus on yoga until I feel up for training runs. I completed a full marathon not too long ago; I’m not worried about a PR right now, after getting so sick. I just want to finish and have some fun! The medals are the same, regardless of the time it takes it finish. There’s plenty of time and races for the PR. I just want to get back into shape, and I can see being back on my A game by February, to start training for LA Marathon with some longer runs.
I am going to train with low-impact strength training and yoga! Every January, my fave youtube yoga instructor, Adriene Mishler, offers a free 30 Days of Yoga program! This year it’s called True. So, I’m going to focus on that while I recover from this sickness that completely took me down, and a cough that will probably take a couple weeks to shake.
Today I did Yoga for New Beginnings, because I finally felt well enough to get back on the mat! This is the video Adriene released on NYE, and it felt like a good one to ease in to today, the first practice to greet the new year! It was. If I’m feeling up to it later, I may do the first True practice, but things are a little touch and go right now. I just started feeling better, and after having to call out sick to work this week (including New Year’s Day… in a health food restaurant that offers green juices – you have to be on your death bed to have the balls to do that) I have to go back in STRONG tomorrow. I only have a few weeks left there, and then I start really living in the new city Mike and I have moved to. We left LA, and I’m spending a few hours a day commuting back and forth from our new city to my job in LA. It’s pretty grueling, I’m not surprised I got so sick, and I’m ready to begin simplifying my life again. I don’t know what the next few months hold in terms of where we are going to settle and what I’m going to do for work, but I trust, for the first time maybe in my whole life, it’s going to be absolutely fine, it’s going to work out, and I’m going to be fulfilled, have fun, and this is all part of a new exciting adventure. If I were someone who set intentions, it would be to keep that sense of playfulness, curiosity an trust in all areas of my life, as a mindset. So, maybe I am someone who sets intentions. Next up, mantras on my bathroom mirror! (I suppose they help sometimes, especially when written in red lipstick!)
What are your goals, intentions an resolutions for the new year? Please share below, would love to hear them!

If you don’t wear Oofos for recovery, are you even ready for your next run? Seriously, these recovery sandals are game-changers.
