Race Day Essentials – Body Glide is Vegan!

February 28, 2018   /   byrunningwhilevegan  / Categories :  Running

I started this blog not just to write about workout videos and race recaps, but as a source for other vegan runners to find information I had a hard time with when I first started running. I went into my first half marathon blindly, which was fun in that way being a beginner can be – there was so much to keep learning and space to keep growing! I didn’t know what I didn’t know!

I didn’t know about Gu Packs, Nuun, hydration, nutrition, run form, compression socks, shoes or run apparel. I knew how to sign up for a race, and to run it.

Even though there is a charm about that naivete and gung-ho attitude, I’m grateful for all I’ve learned about pre-race and distance training run prep and post-run recovery. It’s only helped me become a stronger, more adept runner. Inept nutrition, hydration and recovery make for unsuccessful runs, long term.

It’s up to you what works for your body – not everything I utilize will work for you! For instance, I do well with energy gel packs, no matter the manufacturer, but for many people, these cause upset stomachs.

YOU GOT THIS.

One item that helps out many a runner is an anti-chafing stick! I like using Body Glide before a long race; I don’t tend to need it for shorter distances. I am so relieved this brand is vegan! It’s available at Target, REI and race expos – it’s definitely the most popular brand out there. And for good reason!

I decided to wear a dress (with running shorts underneath) for the Rock’n Roll Los Angeles half marathon. I’ve never deviated away from clothes that are tried and true, but wanted to do something special for Halloween! I put Body Glide everywhere to protect me from those sequins. Ended chafe free (it was the hills that killed me)!

Vaseline is an alternative to Body Glide, and is usually passed out on sticks to runners during half and full marathons. Vaseline is not vegan. Look, whatever happens on the course stays on the course, but if you are curious about vegan substitutes, here is a short list! (The first one contains beeswax, but a quick google search will find you even more brands.)
